How Far in Advance Should You Plan a Proposal?
This is one of the first questions people ask when they've made the decision to propose, and the short answer is - sooner than you think. There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to planning a proposal, especially if you are planning to share the moment with friends and family, and want to keep it a surprise from your significant other. Here are the things to consider.
The Short Answer
Some venues need to be booked well in advance if you are to get the experience you really want. Ideally, you want to be giving yourself more than a month, maybe even longer depending on the location and time of the year. Bear in mind, you also need to get the ring sorted for the big day, and that can take some time.
The earlier you start, the more options you have. It really is that simple.
The Ring
If you haven't bought the ring yet, this is where to start. Custom or bespoke rings can take anywhere from four to twelve weeks to be made, and even off-the-shelf rings may need resizing which takes additional time. Factor in the possibility that you might visit several jewellers before finding the right one, and you'll understand why leaving this to the last minute is a risk not worth taking.
A good rule of thumb is to have the ring sorted at least a month before the proposal date. That gives you breathing room if anything needs adjusting and removes one major source of stress from the final weeks of planning.
The Venue
Popular proposal venues such as rooftop terraces, luxury hotel suites, private event spaces and outdoor estates book up quickly, particularly on weekends. If you have a specific date or location in mind, such as a birthday or anniversary, there is no excuse to get it locked in as soon as possible. For peak periods like Valentine's Day weekend, summer Saturdays or the Christmas and New Year period, at least a few months is not unusual.
Leaving venue booking too late means compromising either on the date, the location or both. Getting in early means you get exactly what you want.
The Proposal Setup
If you're planning a grand proposal with one of our setups, we advise locking it in as soon as possible, but we do our best to cater for last-minute proposals. We understand sometimes good ideas can come about late, especially with such as busy schedule, and we will try our best to accommodate any requests.
Involving Family and Friends
If you want family or friends to be there for the moment, or to be part of the surprise in any way, give them as much notice as possible. People have busy lives, and the last thing you want is for someone to have a prior commitment on the day.
Last-Minute Proposals - Is It Possible?
Absolutely. Sometimes the moment presents itself and you want to move quickly. Sometimes you simply haven't had the headspace to plan further ahead. At PopTheQ, we regularly work with clients who come to us with a week or even less to spare, and we still make it work.
If you're in a time crunch, get in touch as early as possible and we'll tell you honestly what's achievable.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing is that the proposal itself feels thoughtful and considered, and that happens when the planning has been given the time it deserves. The moment you make the decision to propose is the moment to start planning.
At PopTheQ, we help couples at every stage of the planning process - from the very first conversation about what they want to the moment the setup is ready and waiting. However much time you have, we'll make the most of it.
