How Much Does a Proposal Setup Cost in the UK?
How much a proposal costs is one of the first questions people ask when they start planning, and it can varies quite significantly. We have seen some couples arrive in a helicopter, to a horse and carriage waiting to carry them to the setup. Others prefer something more intimate. Ultimately, it depends on what you, and your significant other prefer, but this article will contain and honest breakdown of what to expect, and things to consider.
The Ring
Sorting the ring is often the largest cost involved in a proposal, but it's a great place to start. The average engagement ring in the UK costs somewhere between £1,500 and £3,000, but rings can be found beautifully below that range and extend well beyond it depending on the stone, the metal and the design.
If you're working to a budget, there are ways to find something genuinely stunning without spending a fortune. Lab-grown diamonds offer the same look and quality as mined stones at a fraction of the price. Many jewellers also offer payment plans, which can help spread the cost if you want to invest more in the ring without it impacting everything else.
The Venue
Deciding on a venue is the next logical step, and again there is a massive range of options. Some venues like a private home, park or a public outdoor space carry no hire cost at all and can be an option for those on a budget.
Luxury hotel suites, rooftop terraces or private event spaces will have a greater fee that ranges from a few hundred pounds to significantly more depending on the location and the time of year. While these experiences are perhaps more luxurious, they can be just as special as ones which are less expensive. Mid-tier venue options might include a standard hotel room, or hiring out a space in a private venue.
The Proposal Setup
The venue and the setup will work together, so it's important to consider what kind of setup you prefer before locking in a venue. The setup is the true centrepiece - the heart arch, the candles, the rose petals, the sign, the flowers and everything that transforms a space into a moment. These will all be in shot when you take those photos to show your family, and look back on in years to come.
This is where PopTheQ comes in, and our packages start at £435 for a Classic setup. This includes a heart arch in your choice of colour, a Will You Marry Me? sign, walkway, rose bouquets on stands, flute candles and a rose teddy bear. Everything you need for a genuinely beautiful proposal, without excess.
Our most popular package, the Grand setup, comes in at £525 and it adds heart balloons, additional candles and a bouquet of flowers. It's the setup most of our clients choose, and it's the one that tends to photograph most beautifully across a range of venues and settings.
For those who want a more magnificent experience, our Deluxe package is £800 and includes everything in the Grand plus tall pillar rose bouquets, Marry Me block letters, cold sparks and a luxury bouquet.
All of our setups are available in red, white or pink, and every element can be discussed and adjusted to suit your vision. We also offer fully bespoke setups for couples who want something entirely tailored, which means the price can shift in either direction depending on the brief.
Photography
Prices for a dedicated proposal photographer to capture the big moment typically start from around £200 to £400 for a short session, and go up from there depending on experience, coverage time and the final deliverables. We offer photography services for £175, which gives our clients an option to work with smaller budgets. We have photographed plenty of proposals, so have the knowledge and experience of staying hidden to maintain the surprise, capturing the right angles, and directing you after for the best pictures and poses.
Dinner and Celebration
Most proposals are followed by some kind of celebration, whether that's a quiet dinner for two, drinks with family and friends or a larger gathering. A reservation at somewhere special doesn't need to break the bank, but having something planned and booked in advance means the evening flows naturally after the moment, rather than fizzling out.
The Full Picture
Putting it all together, a well-planned proposal in the UK typically costs in the range of £1500 - £3000.
There are ways to work around a smaller budget, such as choosing a public venue, or one at home, and choosing our own photography option through PopTheQ. Opting for a Classic or Grand package rather than fully bespoke keeps the setup cost contained while still delivering something genuinely beautiful.
What matters most isn't the total spend, it's the thought behind every element. A proposal that feels personal, considered and beautifully executed will be remembered forever.
The little things matter. The setup matters. The photographs matter. And getting it right, once, is worth far more than the sum of its parts.
At PopTheQ, we work with clients across a range of budgets - from those looking for a clean, elegant setup at an accessible price point to those who want a fully bespoke luxury experience. Whatever you have to work with, we'll help you make the most of it.
