The Ultimate Proposal Checklist: Everything You Need to Think About Before You Pop the Question

Planning a proposal is one of the most exciting things you'll ever do. With so much riding on the moment, the last thing you want is to forget something important, so here is a checklist to make sure everything goes smoothly on the day.

1. Make sure she looks and feels her best

Without spoiling the surprise, try to engineer a reason for her to get dressed up - a "dinner reservation," a "catch-up with friends," or simply suggesting a nice day out. If you can subtly nudge her towards getting her nails done in the days before, even better. Those ring photos will last a lifetime. The key is to make it feel completely normal - if you suddenly start acting mysterious or overly romantic out of nowhere, she may start to suspect something is coming. Keep it casual and natural.

2. Don't give away the surprise

This one is harder than it sounds. In the weeks leading up to the proposal, it's easy to let excitement get the better of you - an accidental comment, a suspicious Google search left open, or a friend who can't keep a secret. Be mindful of who you tell. Make sure your friends and family know to keep things strictly between themselves.

3. Practise your speech

You don't need a script, but you do need a plan. In the heat of the moment, even the most confident people can go completely blank. Think about what you want to say: why you love her, what she means to you, and why you want to spend the rest of your life with her. Write it down, say it out loud, and practise it until it feels natural.

You don't have to memorise it word for word - in fact, the most heartfelt speeches are the ones that come from the heart in the moment, but having a clear idea of what you want to express means you won't find yourself fumbling for words when it matters most. Having a phone out for your speech can make pictures look a bit less authentic - eye contact is important, so try not to stare at a screen.

4. Have the ring ready, and somewhere safe

It sounds obvious, but in the whirlwind of planning a proposal, the ring can be the last thing on your mind. Make sure it's collected, sized correctly, and stored somewhere safe well in advance. Keep it somewhere she won't accidentally stumble across it, with someone you trust.

5. Have a clear plan for the day

It's important that you plan this day meticulously - it's only going to happen once. You should know exactly where you're going, what time you need to arrive, and what you're going to say.

Have a backup plan in case of unexpected changes - weather, traffic, or a last-minute change of plans. The more prepared you are, the calmer you'll feel when the moment arrives, and that calm will make the whole experience more special for both of you.

6. Think About the Celebration Afterwards

The proposal is the moment, but what comes next matters too. Whether it's a champagne toast just the two of you, a dinner reservation at somewhere special, or a gathering with family and friends who've been in on the secret all along, having something planned for afterwards keeps the evening feeling as magical as the moment itself.

7. Leave the Setup to the Professionals
